Delhi biker fell into open pit: Sub-contractor arrested, FIR for culpable homicide
Delhi Police have arrested a sub-contractor in connection with a tragic accident in Janakpuri, highlighting serious safety lapses. The investigation is ongoing with strict action promised against all responsible parties.

The Delhi Police have arrested sub-contractor Rajesh Prajapati in connection with the death of a young motorcyclist who fell into an open trench in west Delhi’s Janakpuri, marking the first arrest in the case that has triggered widespread outrage over safety lapses.
Police have registered FIR at Janakpuri police station for culpable homicide against the contractor and concerned officials of the Delhi Jal Board.
Investigators said the probe is being carried out on priority and strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
FAMILY WITNESSED VICTIM FALL INTO PIT
According to the police, a family travelling on the same road witnessed the accident on the night it occurred.
“The family saw Kamal falling into the pit,” a police officer said.
The family immediately informed a security guard present at the site and a man living in a tent near the trench.
Police said the man staying in the tent was an employee of sub-contractor Rajesh Prajapati.
“He passed on the information to Rajesh Prajapati without delay,” an officer said.
CONTRACTOR REACHED SITE BUT TOOK NO ACTION
Investigators said Prajapati was informed about the accident at 12.22 am by a junior staff member.
He reached the spot later that night.
“Rajesh came to the site and even saw the motorcycle inside the pit, but did not make any effort to check further or inform the authorities,” a senior police officer said.
Police said this delay and inaction are now a key focus of the investigation.
“He was aware that someone had fallen into the trench. Despite this, he did not ensure rescue or alert emergency services,” the officer said.
SECURITY GUARD ALSO ALERTED STAFF
The police investigation has revealed that the security guard on duty had informed a junior employee of the sub-contractor about the incident soon after it happened.
“The guard told the staff member that a person had fallen into the pit,” an officer said.
“The junior employee then called Rajesh Prajapati and asked him to come to the site.”
Despite being alerted, police said no immediate rescue effort was launched.
CONTRACTOR IN POLICE CUSTODY
Rajesh Prajapati is currently in Delhi Police custody and is being questioned.
Officers said they are examining call records, CCTV footage and site records to reconstruct the sequence of events.
“Several people were aware of the incident during the night. We are verifying why no timely action was taken,” a senior investigator said.
Police said more arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.
FIR AGAINST DJB OFFICIALS
The FIR has also named concerned officials of the Delhi Jal Board for their alleged role in the incident.
Investigators are probing whether safety norms were ignored and whether proper barricading and lighting were absent at the site.
Officials said responsibility will be fixed after examining project records and supervision details.
DELHI GOVERNMENT PROMISES STRICT ACTION
Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood said the government had acted without delay after the incident.
Speaking to the media earlier, Sood had said, “The government has suspended officials, registered a police case and ordered a detailed investigation.”
“Wherever negligence is found, arrests will be made. No guilty person will be spared.”
He had added that the enquiry was ongoing and accountability would be ensured at every level.
PROBE CONTINUES
Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the full chain of responsibility, including the role of contractors, sub-contractors and supervising officials.
“We are collecting technical reports and witness statements. Every lapse will be examined,” an officer said.
