As New York City battles an extended spell of extreme cold, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has shared his experience of the biting weather, capturing the city’s mood during the ongoing deep freeze.

Mahindra, who is currently in the United States, shared his observations on X while reacting to the biting cold that has gripped the city for days. Referring to a photograph he clicked after a recent snowstorm, he said the image captured the collective mood of New York as it struggles under persistently freezing conditions.

In his post, Mahindra acknowledged that his visit coincided with extreme weather. “I’m in New York and I must admit my timing could have been better,” he wrote, before pointing to the severity of the chill. “It’s 14°F outside. Colder than most of Alaska,” he added, underlining just how unusual the conditions have been.

The industrialist noted that New York City had, for the first time, issued an extreme cold warning, a rare move for a city accustomed to harsh winters but not prolonged cold of this intensity. Temperatures in the city dropped below freezing on January 24 and remained there for over a week. On January 28, daytime highs struggled to rise above minus 5 degrees Celsius, made worse by strong winds that drove wind chill levels even lower.

Mahindra’s post centred around a photograph of a snow-covered car parked on a street days after the snowfall. “Took a photograph of this car a few days after the snowstorm. It’s still in the same position, with the snow intact,” he wrote. For him, the unmoved vehicle became a metaphor. “Symbolises how New York feels right now: imprisoned by a cold snap that refuses to yield,” he said.

His reflection struck a chord online, with users resonating with the imagery and sharing their own experiences of enduring the unrelenting cold, as New York continues to wait for relief from winter’s tight grip.
