Ravi Shankar Prasad is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a former Union Cabinet Minister for Law and Justice & Information Technology. He has been a Member of Parliament since 2000 and has served on several important parliamentary committees. He is a renowned lawyer and advocate in the Supreme Court of India.
He was born on August 30, 1954 and hails from Patna, Bihar. His father, Late Thakur Prasad, was one of the founding members of Jan Sangh and worked as an advocate at the Patna High Court. Bimla Prasad is the mother of Ravi Shankar Prasad. His sister, Anuradha Prasad, is married to Congress politician Rajeev Shukla and owns BAG Films and Media Ltd. Prasad completed his higher education at Patna University, where he pursued a BA honours, MA in Political Science and LL.B. He was a member of the ABVP in college and took part in the student movement headed by Jai Prakash Narayan. He also got arrested during the emergency. He married Dr. Maya Shankar on February 3, 1982, and they have two children together, Aditi Shankar and Aditya Shankar.
He represented 'Ram Lalla' in the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute and argued a PIL against Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam.
He initially was a youth member of the BJP and became the vice president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1991. Prasad was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1998 under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and served for two terms. He served in several ministries such as Coal, Law & Justice and Information & broadcasting. He won the 2019 general elections from the Patna Sahib constituency, receiving 61.8% of the votes. In 2019, Prasad was appointed Minister of Law and Justice, as well as Electronics and Information Technology. He remained in charge of both the ministries till 2021.
