Maharashtra Local Body Election

The Supreme Court has finally broken the deadlock over Maharashtra’s long-pending local body elections, directing the State Election Commission to complete the entire exercise by January 31, 2026. For many civic bodies some of which have been functioning with administrators for nearly three years the order brings much-needed clarity.

The delay dates back to 2022, when a dispute over OBC reservation halted preparations. With the court now insisting that the polls be conducted under the earlier, pre-Banthia Commission reservation structure, the SEC has resumed groundwork. One major change voters will notice is the state government’s shift to four-member wards in several municipal corporations (the BMC being the exception), a move officials say is meant to broaden representation and sharpen accountability at the neighbourhood level.

The SEC has been asked to wrap up its delimitation work by October 10, 2025. The court, noting repeated delays in the past, has made it clear that this time there will be no extensions.

Once the election programme is announced, citizens across Maharashtra will head to the polls to choose representatives for municipal corporations, municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats. These bodies play a decisive role in everyday governance from sanitation to building permissions which is why political parties are expected to treat this round as a serious turf battle.

After years of legal back-and-forth, the 2025–2026 civic polls are set to restore elected leadership in hundreds of local bodies and could quietly reshape political equations across the state.
