Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris was elected as the 49th Vice President of the United States in 2021 in the Democratic administration alongside President Joe Biden and became the first woman, the first African American and the first South Asian American to hold the post.

Harris has also served in the US Senate (from 2017-2021) and as the Attorney General of California (from 2011-2017). As a senator, she had championed legislation to reform cash bail, combat hunger, provide rent relief, improve maternal health care and address the climate crisis.

She was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to parents of Indian and Jamaican origin. In 1986, she pursued BA in political science and economics from Harvard University and then earned a law degree from Hastings College in 1989.

Harris subsequently worked as a deputy district attorney (1990–98) in Oakland and rose through the ranks to become the district attorney in 2004. In 2014, she married Douglas Emhoff and the couple has two children - Ella and Cole.
