Jharkhand

One of the richest mineral zones in the world, Jharkhand is situated in the eastern part of India and is the fifteen largest state in India in terms of area. Also called the 'Land of Forests', Jharkhand is one of the newest states in the country and was carved out of Bihar in 2000 and is dominated by the tribal population. The state has always been at the epicenter of Maoist and Naxalite insurgency.

Jharkhand was formed after a long struggle was carried out by the Adivasis or Scheduled Tribes for the upliftment of their socio-economic conditions. Jharkhand shares its borders with Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and its capital city is Ranchi. Dumka is Jharkhand's sub-capital and Jamshedpur is the state's largest city for industrial purposes.

The state boasts of a unique location-specific owing to its closeness to ports of eastern India and is rich in forests, waterfalls, holy places and hills. It is the only state in India that produces coking coal, pyrite and uranium and has a rich amount of iron ore (hematite) reserves.

A large population of Jharkhand speaks Santhali language, whereas, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and English are also spoken. Around 80 per cent of the state's rural population depends on agriculture and rice is the main food of Jharkhand.Jharkhand has emerged as one of the major drivers of the engineering industry due to the availability of rich minerals like iron, aluminium, copper, power, water and industrial labour.

Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Deogarh, Hazaribagh, Giridih are some of the important cities of the state. Baba Baidyanath Temple, Dassam Falls, Jubilee Park, Jonha Falls, Rock Garden, Maithan Dam, Birsa Zoological Park, Basukinath Temple are some of the favourite tourist destinations in Jharkhand.
