Hema Malini, born on October 16, 1948, is one of Bollywood’s most popular and successful leading actresses. She is known for performing both comic and dramatic characters and is also known as the Dream Girl of Hindi cinema.
Although Hema Malini is popular in Hindi movies, she made her debut in 1963 with the Tamil movie Idhu Sathiyam. Her first lead role was in Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968). She went on to star in numerous films in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, establishing herself and garnering commercial success and awards alike.
Hema Malini starred opposite actor Dharmendra regularly. The two of them got married in 1980 and they have two children together, Esha and Ahana Deol.
Towards the end of the 1990s, Hema Malini took a break from acting but she made a comeback in 2003. However, after this, she began to appear in guest and supporting roles in movies. Hema Malini has received eleven nominations for Filmfare Award for Best Actress. In 2000, she won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2019, the Filmfare Special Award for 50 Years of Outstanding Contribution to Cinema. She was also honoured with the Padma Shri, by the Government of India.
Hema Malini is also a trained Bharatanatiyam dancer.
Hema Malini set foot in politics in 1999, when she campaigned for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Vinod Khanna, a former Bollywood actor, in the Lok Sabha Elections in Gurdaspur, Punjab.
She officially joined the BJP in Febraury 2004. Hema Malini served as an MP in the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009. In March 2010, Hema Malini was made general secretary of the BJP.
