Eknath Shinde

Eknath Shinde, born on 9 February 1964, is a prominent Indian politician from Maharashtra and a senior leader of the Shiv Sena. He is currently serving as the 10th Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, alongside Ajit Pawar, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Since February 2023, Shinde has also held the position of Chairman of the Shiv Sena, following a major political realignment within the party.

Shinde previously served as the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 30 June 2022 to 5 December 2024, a tenure marked by significant political developments in the state. He has been a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Kopri–Pachpakhadi constituency in Thane since 2009. Earlier, he represented the Thane constituency as an MLA between 2004 and 2009, steadily building his political base in the region.

Shinde rose to national prominence in June 2022, when he led a factional revolt within the Shiv Sena, triggering the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis. The rebellion resulted in the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, a coalition comprising the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), the Nationalist Congress Party, and the Indian National Congress. Shinde, along with a group of rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, withdrew support from the MVA and extended backing to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was then in opposition.
