Jaya Ekadashi is being observed today during the month of Magha. Worshipping Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna on this day is believed to bring victory, peace and prosperity.
Ekadashi is a sacred day, occurring twice a month in the Hindu calendar, that is considered particularly auspicious for Vrata (fasting) and prayer on the 11th day of each of the two lunar phases (Paksha) in a Hindu Calendar; i.e., on the 11th day of the waxing phase of moon (Shukla Paksha) and on the 11th day of the waning phase of moon (Krishna Paksha). The word “Ekadashi” derives from the Sanskrit for “the eleventh.” Followers, observe this day in the name of Lord Vishnu who is one the main Hindu gods.
On Ekadashi, observing a fast is contemplated as a religious ritual, where the purpose is to purify the body and the mind. Most people fast grains, rice, lentils and go on a diet of fruits, milk and nuts. Some fast and just drink water whereas others go on a partial fast. It is felt that if one can learn to master the sensual appetites by learning to eat properly and knowing how to pray, then one evolves as a disciplined, focused being filled with devotion.
In Hindu scripture, Ekadashi (literally eleven) is the eleventh day of the two lunar phases, i.e., the bright and dark phases. Referring to a collection of 24 puranas: According to the Padma Purana, a person who observes the Ekadashi Vrata is as powerful as the demons Madhu-Bhaṇḍa; Present in both lunar phases, the Ekadashi tithi is either of Dvadashi or the Ekadashi tithi which is marked by Gurudev in the same tithi, and immediate follows the Dvadashi of every mast months of the Hindu Calendar.
Every Ekadashi is named and dedicated to a reason such as Nirjala Ekadashi when people fast without drinking a drop of water and Vaikunta Ekadashi which is celebrated with pomp in temples of Lord Vishnu.
