Prithviraj Sukumaran explains why playing the villain in Varanasi was complex
In a recent promotional event of his upcoming film Varanasi, Prithviraj Sukumaran spoke about his role as the antagonist in the film. Varanasi is set to release in theatres on April 7, 2027.

Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran opened up about the challenges of portraying his character Kumbha in SS Rajamouli’s upcoming film Varanasi. He described why the role demanded a deeply nuanced performance and pushed him as an actor.
During the promotions of his film, the actor spoke about his character and explained the nuances behind it. “As an actor, especially after doing so much work, you function almost subconsciously, always aware that your body is available as a tool of communication. Then you are placed in a situation where nothing from the neck down is visible, and you realise that whatever you do physically will not be seen. Everything you have at your disposal is concentrated on your face. What you need to convey must come through your expressions and eyes, which makes it extremely challenging,” he said.
“None of Kumba’s emotions is one-dimensional. Everything he does and says carries a great deal of weight from his past, with layers of subtext beneath every line. That complexity is what makes the character so compelling for me, and that is what truly excited me as an actor,” Sukumaran added.
The actor even expressed his admiration for the director and his crystal clear vision.
“I also feel privileged to work with a director who is so clear and laser-focused on how each character should appear on screen. Having such a clutter-free creative environment is a blessing for an actor. I am really looking forward to watching the film and exploring more of Kumba’s world,” he concluded.
The teaser for Varanasi had already offered a glimpse of Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, placed in various settings across the globe, while the timestamps on these frames indicated that there would be aspects of time travel included in the film. However, no confirmation was given regarding the speculation.
Even Rajamouli, during an interview when asked about this, withheld information, stating that he cannot reveal much, but the idea of the teaser was to drop Easter eggs that fans could pick up on.
Varanasi also stars Priyanka Chopra as Mandakini with music by Oscar-winning MM Keeravani and a story by V Vijayendra Prasad. The film is slated for release on April 7, 2027.
