Singer Nick Jonas has opened up for the first time about the intense circumstances surrounding the birth of his and Priyanka Chopra’s daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Speaking on the Jay Shetty Podcast, the singer revealed that their daughter arrived prematurely, weighing just 1 pound 11 ounces, and was “purple basically” when she was born. Malti required six blood transfusions and weeks of careful monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Jonas described how he and Chopra managed 12-hour hospital shifts during the Covid-19 pandemic, taking turns to ensure Malti had round-the-clock care. “It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day and to see other families going through a similar situation,” he said. After 3.5 months of rigorous care and gradual progress, the couple finally got to take Malti home.

How did Malti’s early days go?

Malti’s arrival came as a shock to the couple. Jonas recalled that they had been expecting her in April 2022, but were called in earlier than anticipated. “She came into the world under very intense circumstances, which I’ve never really talked about,” he said. With the dedication of the neonatal team, Malti slowly gained weight and stabilised, despite the challenges of being a premature infant during a pandemic.

What was the hospital routine like?

Jonas and Chopra alternated 12-hour shifts at the hospital for months, ensuring Malti received constant care. The singer described the experience as “visceral,” leaving lasting impressions. Their days involved close monitoring, coordinating with doctors, and navigating the emotions of having a fragile newborn while Covid restrictions limited outside support.

Looking back and moving forward

Reflecting on the ordeal, Jonas expressed deep admiration for Malti’s resilience. He called the experience humbling and “awestruck” to witness her progress. Now healthy and home, Malti has brought joy to the family, and Jonas emphasised the gratitude he and Chopra feel for the hospital staff who supported them throughout the crisis.

In addition to family life, Jonas is gearing up for his upcoming film Power Ballad, co-starring Paul Rudd and directed by John Carney, releasing June 5. 2026.
