Kristen Stewart considers leaving US, says Trump era limits her freedom
Kristen Stewart opens up about feeling trapped in the US under Trump's second term. Why is she now looking to leave and where could she go next? Find out.

Kristen Stewart has revealed she is seriously considering leaving the United States, saying the current political climate under Donald Trump’s second term is making it impossible for her to work freely. The actor described the situation as so destabilising that it feels like “reality is breaking completely”.
Speaking to The Times of London, the Oscar-nominated star admitted she no longer feels comfortable or creatively safe in her home country. Asked whether she sees herself staying based in the US, Stewart replied bluntly: “Probably not.” She added, “I can’t work freely there,” signalling that her frustration has moved beyond politics and into her professional life.
Why does Kristen Stewart want to leave the US?
For Stewart, the issue isn’t just ideological disagreement -- it’s about day-to-day reality. She explained that the Trump era has created an atmosphere that feels restrictive and unsettling, particularly for artists. “Reality is breaking completely under Trump,” she said, suggesting that the environment has become increasingly hostile to creative freedom.
The Spencer actor made it clear that her concerns go beyond discomfort, hinting that the cultural shift is directly affecting her ability to make films on her own terms.
Where could she move instead?
Europe appears to be firmly on Stewart’s radar. She spoke about wanting to base herself in places where filmmaking feels more open and collaborative, saying she wants to “create the reality we want to live in”. The actress has long gravitated towards independent cinema and international projects, making a European move a natural next step.
Her plan, she said, would be to produce films abroad and then bring them back to American audiences -- even if that comes with a touch of defiance. Stewart added that she wants to “shove them down the throat of the American people”, underlining her determination to keep her voice heard.
Is Stewart alone in feeling this way?
Not at all. Stewart’s comments echo a wider mood in Hollywood, with several high-profile figures choosing to relocate. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have settled in the UK, Rosie O’Donnell has moved abroad, and James Cameron now lives in New Zealand, citing the move as necessary “for sanity”.
Stewart’s discomfort with Trump is also personal. The former president famously commented on her relationship with Robert Pattinson back in 2012, something she has since described as bizarrely obsessive.
While she hasn’t set a firm timeline for leaving the US, Stewart’s remarks point to a growing trend: for many creatives, the Trump era isn’t just political -- it’s a breaking point.
