Halle Berry confirms engagement to musician Van Hunt after six years of dating

Actor Halle Berry has confirmed that she is engaged to singer-songwriter Van Hunt, putting an end to recent speculation about their relationship. The actor shared the update while revealing that although the couple plans to marry, they have not yet finalised a wedding date.

Speaking about the confusion during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Berry said, “There’s some confusion that he asked to marry me, and I said no," the 59-year-old actor mentioned. When host Jimmy Fallon asked, “But that’s not the case?" Halle clarified, “No, that’s not the case. I did not say ‘no,’ we just don’t have a date. Of course, I said ‘yes, I would marry him.’"

Fallon congratulated the couple, saying, “I’m so happy, you guys are a great couple." Berry also showed off her engagement ring during the interview and added, “Thank you. He did put a little ring on it," prompting a playful remark from the host about the diamond’s size: “Oh, a little."

The clarification comes months after Van Hunt told Today.com in June 2025 that he had proposed but that Berry appeared hesitant at the time due to her past marriages. “I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold, as you can see," he said, adding, “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her."

For context, Berry has been married three times before. She was first married to former MLB player David Justice from 1993 to 1997, followed by singer-songwriter Eric Benet in 2001; the two separated in 2005. Her most recent marriage was to actor Olivier Martinez, lasting from 2013 to 2016. Van Hunt was also previously married and later divorced.

Speaking earlier to the same outlet, Berry noted that her relationship with Hunt feels unlike her previous ones. “I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married. And I feel like I should, we should get married, but it’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do just because we want that expression," she explained.

Halle Berry and Van Hunt first met in 2020 and grew close while connecting virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Perfect Stranger actor made their relationship Instagram official in September that year, and the couple later made their red carpet debut together at the Oscars in 2021.
