Elected: N.K. Singh, revenue secretary, as the chairman of the high-level expert group appointed by the UN secretary-general to deal with drug-related problems. The inter-government expert group which met in Geneva has elected India to chair the group. This was in recognition of India's commendable track record both in adherence and implementation of the conventions relating to drugs.Awarded: Ramanand Sagar,noted film and television producer, the Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award, by the Maharashtra Government. Chief Minister Manohar Joshi presented the award to the thespian in Mumbai on April 30, the birth anniversary of Dadasaheb Phalke - the father of Indian cinema.Died: Ramakant Bhikaji Desai, 58, former Test pace bowler and chairman of the national cricket selection committee, following a heart attack in Mumbai. Nicknamed "Tiny" for his short stature, Desai played in 28 Tests for India in the late 1950s and '60s and took 74 wickets, then the highest by a quickie for the country.Appointed: C.S. Vaidyanathan, senior Supreme Court advocate, as the additional solicitor-general of India. Vaidyanathan has appeared on behalf of several politicians, including Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi.Died:Balram Mohanty, 84, freedom fighter and writer, following a cardiac arrest in Bhubaneswar.
