After the 14th amendment to the Indian Constitution, Puducherry, previously known as Pondicherry, was recognized as a parliamentary constituency. In 2006, its name was officially changed to Puducherry. The Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency comprises 30 assembly seats. As per the 2011 census, the population was approximately 250,000. Puducherry is renowned as a popular tourist destination, attracting both national and international visitors. In terms of parliamentary history, the first Lok Sabha elections in Puducherry were held in 1967, resulting in a victory for the Congress party. The Congress continued its winning streak in 1971. However, in 1977, the AIADMK secured its first victory. The Congress regained dominance from 1980 to 1996. The streak was broken by the DMK in 1998, but the Congress reclaimed victory in 1999. In 2004, the PMK emerged victorious, followed by another win for the Congress in 2009. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congresss V Vaithilingam emerged victorious with 444,981 votes. The AIADMK candidate Narayanasamy secured the second position with 247,956 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, R Radhakrishnan of the AIADMK won with 255,826 votes, followed by Congresss V Narayanasamy with 194,972 votes.
