The Nagaland Lok Sabha seat has a Christian-majority population. The Nagaland Lok Sabha seat first held elections in 1967, where SC Jamir, an independent candidate, registered an unopposed victory. 2019 Mandate: There were 4 candidates in the fray for the Nagaland Lok Sabha seat. KL Chishi was the Congress candidate, Hayuthung Tunge represented the National Peoples Party, incumbent MP Tokheho Yepthemi contested on the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) ticket, and Dr MM Tharomava Konyak was an independent candidate. NDPPs Tokheho Yepthemi won this seat. Yepthemi defeated Congress candidate KL Chishi by a margin of 16,344 votes. The Nagaland Lok Sabha seat saw a voter turnout of 78%.
2014 Mandate: In 2014, Neiphiu Rio of the National Democratic Progressive Party won the Nagaland Lok Sabha seat. However, after the state Assembly elections, Neiphiu Rio resigned and became the Chief Minister of Nagaland. A by-election was held on May 28, 2018, in which BJP-backed NDPP candidate Tokheho Yepthemi won by a margin of 1,73,746 votes. Tokheho Yepthemi received 5,94,205 votes and Naga Peoples Front (NPF) candidate Apok Jamir received 4,20,459 votes. The 2018 by-election saw a voting percentage of 70%.
