The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has been co-featured in the Guinness World Records for the Largest Electric Bicycle Delivery, marking a milestone in India’s push for sustainable mobility.

The record was achieved under the E-Cycle programme, a large-scale electric bicycle distribution initiative carried out in collaboration with EMotorad, the Kuppam Area Development Authority (KADA), the District Collectorate of Chittoor, and the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

The delivery event was organised by the Andhra Pradesh government through KADA in the Kuppam constituency. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu formally presented the Guinness World Records certificate at the event.

The initiative focused on promoting low-carbon and sustainable local transport. IIT Kanpur participated as the technical partner through its Kuppam Net Zero Constituency Project, offering technical guidance and planning support to ensure the programme’s execution.

Two IIT Kanpur alumni played a key role in coordinating the effort.

Hari Shankar, consultant to the Net Zero project, and Vikas Marmat, Project Director at KADA, were closely involved in planning and implementation. IIT Kanpur was represented at the event by the project’s principal investigators, Manoj K. Tiwari and Rajeev Jindal.

Commenting on the achievement, IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said the recognition reflected the institute’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and public-focused innovation.

He noted that the Kuppam project demonstrated how technical expertise, policy support, and administrative coordination could come together to deliver real impact on the ground.

Prof Tiwari and Prof Jindal said the Guinness recognition marked an important step in IIT Kanpur’s work on sustainability-driven projects. They also acknowledged the institute’s administration and partner organisations for enabling collaboration at scale.

The record adds to ongoing efforts in Kuppam to promote clean transport and reduce carbon emissions at the local level.

Officials said electric bicycles offer an affordable and practical option for short-distance travel while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Founded in 1959, IIT Kanpur is recognised as an Institute of National Importance. With a strong focus on science, engineering, and interdisciplinary research, the institute continues to work with governments and communities to translate academic expertise into public solutions.
