USA won the toss and opted to field on a dew-laden evening at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, which also played host to a star-studded opening ceremony.
Samson made way for in-form Ishan Kishan, who enters the T20 World Cup on the back of his maiden T20I hundred, scored against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram last week.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj, who was drafted in as a replacement for the injured Harshit Rana, was handed a start straightaway. The Gujarat Titans fast bowler came in for Bumrah.
Confirming Bumrah’s absence, the BCCI said in a statement on Saturday evening: “Jasprit Bumrah was unavailable for selection for India’s opening T20 World Cup fixture against the USA due to illness. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his condition.”
