In a significant development, according to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) report an ancient temple existed beneath the Gyanvapi Mosque Complex.
The historical structure, referred to as a 'mandir' or Hindu temple is believed to have existed before the construction of the current mosque complex. The ASI report highlights that the western part of the Gyanvapi Mosque was originally a part of a Hindu temple. Elements of this former structure, including Hindu temple pillars and plasters, were reused during the construction of the mosque. In total, 32 Hindu temple inscriptions have been found on the site, further solidifying these claims of a pre-existing temple beneath the mosque complex.
