My Take: Country needs better education, jobs, not a bruising political battle over dress and religion

The video from a Karnataka college of a young woman in a burkha being chased and harassed by boys screeching Jai Shri ram at her is deeply distressing and shameful. It reflects just how deep religious polarisation fed by a cycle of prejudice and hate threatens normal civil behaviour even on a campus. Whether a Muslim girl has a 'right' to wear a hijab as school uniform is a issue that must be settled in the domain of constitutional rights and duties. It cannot become an opportunity for brazen lumpenism backed by a partisan state to take over.
