Protesters in Tuticorin had planned to gherao the plant -- property of the Vedanta group -- as well as the collector's office. All vehicles inside the office were torched.

Locals have said the plant is polluting air and groundwater in the region. Thousands gathered to protest on May 22, which marked the 100th day of a months-long movement.
