In its editorial on May 1, Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must ban burqa in public places across the country as it poses threat to national security.

Poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar was quick to counter this. Javed Akhtar said he was not averse to a law banning the burqa if it was accompanied with a similar law against the 'ghunghat' prevalent among Hindu women in Rajasthan.
