PM Modi in Maldives for 60th Independence Day: A reset in ties after pro-China tilt

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Malé, Maldives, where he is the chief guest for the country's 60th National Day celebrations. This visit is significant as it marks an effort to reset diplomatic ties between the two nations, which became strained after the new president, perceived to be close to China, was appointed in November 2023. The visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives in 2025. Several India-assisted development projects, including connectivity and infrastructure, are on the agenda for launch.
