N Biren Singh resigned as Manipur Chief Minister on Sunday, nearly two years after the ethnic violence erupted in the north-eastern state. Singh tendered his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the BJP government in the riot-hit state faces the possibility of a no-confidence motion and a floor test by the Congress-led Opposition. Manipur has been reeling under ethnic violence that broke out in May 2023, and has resulted in the deaths of over 250 people since then.
