Exclusive: Justice SK Kaul speaks to Preeti Choudhry, 'Don't bring political battles into court'

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, in his interview with India Today's Preeti Choudhry, voiced concerns over the current collegium system for appointing judges in India.

He highlighted the need for a more transparent dialogue between the judiciary and the executive to replace what he perceives as secretive consultations. Justice Kaul, who retired from the Supreme Court on December 25, 2023, criticised the government's undue influence and the perception of nepotism within the judicial appointment process.

He suggested that a more open system could have been established if the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) had not been dismissed, fostering trust between the branches of government.
