The BJP surged ahead in the Pune civic elections as early trends

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a decisive victory in the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, establishing a commanding lead over its rivals.

According to the latest results, the BJP winning 96 of Pune’s 165 wards, far ahead of the Nationalist Congress Party, which secured 20 seats, while the NCP (SP) managed just three. Exit polls had earlier projected a strong performance for the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, voting for which was held on Thursday.

The polls were held amid significant political realignments. Ahead of the elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS president Raj Thackeray reunited last month, while the rival NCP factions stitched together a local alliance in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to take on the BJP-led combine.

The civic elections were conducted after gaps ranging from several months to years, as the terms of most municipal corporations had ended between 2020 and 2023. Nine of the 29 corporations are located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, one of the most urbanised regions in the country.

Polling took place in Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Thane, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Mira-Bhayandar, Nanded-Waghala, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Latur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalna and Ichalkaranji.
