At least 12 police personnel were injured during the 'tazia' Muharram procession in Delhi on Saturday, July 29. People clashed with police and pelted stones at them. They were stopped from changing the designated route in west Delhi's Nangloi. Stones were pelted at the police in Delhi, resulting in injuries to 12 police personnel. In addition, several vehicles were damaged in the clashes. Following the clashes, the police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the "unruly crowd,â Delhi Police officials told the media. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Harendra Singh, the clash started when a few 'tazia' procession organisers tried to divert their procession from the route that was decided earlier. Following the objection to the diversion, stones were pelted at the police personnel. To control the situation and disperse the crowd, the police had to resort to a âmild lathi-chargeâ to control the mob, DCP Singh added. Currently, the situation is under control, DCP said.
