India Today on ground: Israel-Hamas war has left the Dead Sea desolate

The Dead Sea, a landlocked salt lake nestled between Israel and Jordan, finds itself in a unique geographical position in relation to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The region surrounding the Dead Sea is marked by the Judean and Negev deserts, with towering mountains visible from the Israeli side.

This area has not been immune to the tensions and violence that characterise the Israel-Hamas war. The Dead Sea's proximity to the West Bank, an area under Israeli occupation since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, places it near the epicenter of longstanding disputes.

In October 2023, Hamas launched a significant attack on southern Israel, resulting in over 1,400 deaths and further destabilizing the region.

The Dead Sea's location has also made it a place of refuge; following a massacre by Hamas, Israeli authorities evacuated survivors to a hotel near this body of water, underscoring its role as a geographic landmark amidst the turmoil of war.
