World Cup 2019 is barely a few days away. All the talk will now revolve around Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, David Warner, Steve Smith and Rashid Khan. This is big. The men's Cricket World Cup will capture the imagination of Indian cricket fans for the next month-and-a-half. Can Kohli lead India to World Cup glory? Can he do what Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni did before him?
There is buzz. There is huge excitement and plenty of anticipation.
But 2 years ago in England, Mithali Raj had travelled with her women's team to reprsent India. The same buzz was missing for the first few days till India reached the women's World Cup final and lost a thriller to England. After that exciting evening at Lord's, women's cricket in India changed forever. Like Mithali and Jhulan Goswami, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana became household names.
Cricket fans now talk of equal pay. Women cricketers deserve as much stardom as their male colleagues. And why not! They play for India too and reaching the World Cup final is a huge achievement. Many feel women's cricket came of age on July 23, 2017.
