Australian Open, Day 5 Highlights: Jannik Sinner advances, Djokovic and Swiatek script big wins

Jannik Sinner has come up trumps against Australia's James Duckworth, winning the second-round match 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. 

Stan Wawrinka has rolled back the years with a stunning five-set thriller against France’s Arthur Gea. After an epic 4 hours and 33 minutes, the three-time Grand Slam champion emerged victorious 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-3), showing immense grit and resolve when it mattered most.

Wawrinka now awaits the winner of the match between ninth seed Taylor Fritz and Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva, as the Swiss veteran continues his quest with another hard-fought win under his belt.

Naomi Osaka is right under the pump after dropping the second set to Sorana Cirstea, and the momentum had firmly swung away from the former world No.1. But champions respond, and Osaka has done just that. 

Digging deep in the decider, she has shown trademark resilience, striking early to snatch a crucial break and edge 1–0 ahead in the final set.

The pressure now shifts squarely onto Cirstea. Can she stem the tide, settle her nerves, and force her way back into the contest? Or will Osaka tighten her grip and begin to reassert control at a pivotal moment in this match?

After being swept aside in the opening set, James Duckworth raised his level and pushed hard in the second, but Sinner found another gear when it mattered most.

The Italian shut the door with a decisive late surge, clinching the set 6–4 and tightening his grip on the match.

The Italian cruised through the opening set 6–1 in under 28 minutes, barely giving Duckworth a foothold as he dictated rallies with relentless pace and precision.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek barely broke stride as she eased into the next round, putting away Marie Bouzkova 6–2, 6–3 in a polished Round 2 performance. The opening set was vintage Swiatek — relentless, controlled and one-sided — as she dictated play from the baseline and kept the Czech under constant pressure.

Bouzkova did manage to inject some resistance early in the second set, finding better rhythm and forcing longer rallies to briefly test Swiatek’s patience. But the world No. 2 soon shifted gears, rediscovered her depth and precision, and methodically pulled away, restoring order and closing out the match in her familiar, commanding style.

Kia Arena is rocking as Arthur Gea and Stan Wawrinka trade blows in a high-octane battle that’s gone the distance into a fourth set.

The Frenchman Gea currently leads 6–4, 3–6, 6–3, but the Swiss veteran Wawrinka is digging in, refusing to yield in a gripping, evenly matched contest.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has hit the ground running in her Round 2 clash, taking the opening set 6–2 against Marie Bouzkova and moving ahead 4–3 in the second.

After a largely one-sided first set in which Swiatek dominated proceedings, the Czech has found better rhythm in the second, pushing back with greater intent as the contest begins to tighten.

A tough outing for India’s Yuki Bhambri at Melbourne Park.

Bhambri and American partner Nicole Melichar-Martinez bowed out of the mixed doubles after a closely fought loss to the German-Chinese pair of Tim Pütz and Zhang Shuai, going down 6–3, 1–6, 10–6.

It’s not the end of Bhambri’s Australian Open run though — the Indian remains in contention in the men’s doubles event.

Things got wild on Margaret Court Arena, and Amanda Anisimova was right at the centre of it.

The fourth seed brought the heat in a “crazy” second-round clash, overpowering doubles ace Katerina Siniakova 6–1, 6–4 with a mix of raw pace and fearless shot-making.

From the first ball, Anisimova was in full control, ripping winners and keeping the crowd buzzing as she stormed into the next round.

American 8th seed Ben Shelton has laid down an early marker in Melbourne. 

He demolishes Australian qualifier Dane Sweeny 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 42 minutes to cruise into men's singles third round. 

Dane had the backing of the local crowd, especially after his sensational win over Gael Monfils in the opening round. 

But, he had no answers against Shelton today. 

The Serb has laid down an early marker here. He beats qualifier Francesco Maestrelli 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The Serbian legend is in complete control, powering through the second set 6–2 and leaving Francesco Maestrelli searching for answers.

With Maestrelli leaking errors and Djokovic dictating every rally, this is fast becoming a one-sided affair.

Djokovic asserted control from the outset with rock-solid serving and razor-sharp shot-making, dictating rallies, forcing errors and setting the tone early.

Karen Khachanov has wrapped up a commanding 6–1, 6–4, 6–3 victory over USA’s Nishesh Basavareddy in their men’s singles Round 2 clash at the ANZ Arena.

It’s an early exit for the 20-year-old Indian-origin American, but Day 5 is far from over, with several star-studded encounters still to come.

It’s time for the marquee clash of Day 5 as the Serbian maestro Novak Djokovic takes centre stage at Rod Laver Arena against Italy’s Francesco Maestrelli in their men’s singles Round 2 encounter.

Djokovic has made a commanding start, racing through the opening two games against Maestrelli and immediately lifting the atmosphere inside the arena as the crowd senses something special unfolding.

Karen Khachanov is firmly in control against USA’s Nishesh Basavareddy, racing to a 6–1, 6–4 lead and leaving the young American staring at a potential Round 2 exit.

We’re up and running on Day 5 of the Australian Open, and the action is already heating up with a fiery all-Italian battle taking shape.
