The second round of the Australian Open 2026 gets underway on Wednesday with several of the tournament’s biggest names set to take centre stage in Melbourne. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, women’s top seed Aryna Sabalenka and third seed Coco Gauff are among the stars in action as the competition gathers pace.

Alcaraz continues his quest for a maiden Australian Open crown when he faces Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann. The Spaniard is chasing the only Grand Slam missing from his collection and could become the youngest man to complete a Career Grand Slam. Earlier in the day, defending champion Jannik Sinner progressed after opponent Hugo Gaston retired mid-match.

In the women’s draw, Sabalenka meets Chinese qualifier Zhuoxuan Bai, while Gauff takes on Serbia’s Olga Danilovic in what promises to be a tricky second-round outing.

Several other seeded players are also scheduled to play, including Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, Frances Tiafoe, Mirra Andreeva, Jasmine Paolini and Emma Raducanu.

Indians stars to watch out

With marquee names spread across all major courts, Day 4 promises a packed schedule and plenty of early drama as the second round unfolds in Melbourne.

Well, Carlos Alcaraz was lucky enough to play golf with Roger Federer before his second-round match. 

And here's what the Spaniard has to say about the Swiss great's golf skills. 

"As beautiful as his tennis," when asked how Federer plays his golf. 

Was he surprised? 

"I’m not surprised either. Everything he does, he does with style. His swing is really beautiful. He plays really well — he’s only been playing golf for about two years, and his level is incredible for that time.

"I’ve been playing for five years and he already beat me, so yeah… that hurts," he said.

A 57-minute demolition. 

10th seeds Yuki Bhambri and Andre Goransson defeat Austrlian wildcards James Duckworth and Cruz Hewitt 6-3, 6-4 in men's doubles first-round match. A top show from Indo-Swedish pair. 

With Cruz, the son of legendary Lleyton Hewitt, playing, the crowd was supporting the local wildcards. But, Yuki and Gorransson did well to hold them off. 

Yuki is back in the Round of 32 of men's doubles at the Australian Open for the first time in 12 years.
