Lt Col Neeraj Chopra officially pipped, receives rank in special ceremony

Lieutenant Colonel Neeraj Chopra officially received his honorary commission in the Territorial Army during a special pipping ceremony held in New Delhi on Wednesday, October 22. The event was graced by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and other senior officials of the Indian Army and Territorial Army.

"Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra embodies the highest ideals of discipline, dedication and national pride, serving as an inspiration to generations within the sporting fraternity and the Armed Forces alike," said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during the ceremony.

Neeraj Chopra was awarded the honorary rank on April 16 in recognition of his outstanding achievements in sports. Born on 24 December 1997 in Khandra village, Panipat district, Haryana, Neeraj joined the Indian Army in 2016 and has served with the Rajputana Rifles. He started as a junior commissioned officer at the rank of Naib Subedar on 26 August 2016, was promoted to Subedar in 2021, and then to Subedar Major in 2022.

The 27-year-old athlete made history by becoming the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, followed by a silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He also claimed gold at the World Athletics Championships 2023 and earned multiple medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League. His personal best throw of 90.23 metres, achieved in 2025, highlights his incredible hunger to get better with every competition. 

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to sports and the nation, Neeraj has been honoured with the Padma Shri, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.

Neeraj's journey reflects both sporting brilliance and military dedication. From his early days in Haryana to becoming an Olympic champion and decorated army officer, he continues to inspire athletes and servicemen alike, epitomising perseverance, discipline, and national pride.
