Thackeray Cousins Join Forces for BMC Polls as Mumbai Votes in High-Stakes Battle

This special report covers the critical Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, highlighting a historic political realignment in Mumbai. For the first time in two decades, Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray have joined forces to consolidate the 'Marathi Manus' and Muslim vote bank. A reporter on the ground noted that 'Raj Thackeray has come as a saviour for his brother' to counter the challenge posed by the Eknath Shinde faction and the BJP. The discussion explores whether this new alliance can overcome the 'urban apathy' seen in previous years, where the 2017 turnout was 55.2%. Analysts suggest that while the BJP maintains a strong core among non-Maharashtrian voters, the split in the original Shiv Sena and the separate contesting of various factions have turned the election into a complex 'khichdi'. The programme examines the shift from civic issues to identity politics and the potential impact of the Ladli Behna scheme on women voters in this high-stakes urban battle.

BMC Elections 2026: Can The United Thackerays Reclaim Mumbai From Mahayuti?

On this Special Report, anchor Maria Shakit leads the coverage as voting begins for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The bulletin highlights early voters, including actor Akshay Kumar, and sets the stage for a high-stakes battle between the Mahayuti alliance and the united front of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray. Maria Shakit notes, 'The big thing is live with us from tiny polling booth... where Eknath Shinde's family will be voting shortly.' The program explores whether 'Marathi pride' will sway the polls after a five-year hiatus in local elections. Reporters provide live updates from Bandra and Thane, discussing the survival of the Thackeray legacy against the 'triple engine' government of the BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena. The discussion also touches upon voter apathy in metropolitan cities and the significance of this first civic poll since the 2022 Shiv Sena split.
