Decoding: Why Mission Shakti is significant for India

As a major boost to its space technologies, India successfully launched a mission to test its anti-satellite capabilities in space on March 27. With the possession of A-SAT (Anti-satellites weapons), India became the fourth country to have the technology, after US, China and Russia. Anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes.

The first time National Security Agency had thought of the need for having the capability was in 2007 when China tested their ASAT capability.
