Quota push with eye on 2019 Lok Sabha elections?

The Union cabinet on Monday cleared a proposal for amendments in the Constitution to set aside a 10 per cent quota in jobs and education for economically backward sections.

The move comes barely four months before the Lok Sabha elections as the government faces a swelling Opposition bloc and changing caste equations in the country.

It can be termed the most significant affirmative action by a government since the adoption of the Mandal Commission report by the VP Singh government in 1990.
