Why black fungus is infecting many of India's Covid-19 patients?

India, along with the Covid-19 outbreak, is also witnessing a surge in the cases of 'Black Fungus' among coronavirus patients. The mortality rate of this rare disease is said to be 50 per cent. However, India is not the only country facing this problem. Cases of 'Black Fungus' had been an issue among those with diabetes, well before the outbreak of Covid-19. As per the guidelines released by ICMR, 'Black Fungus' or Mucormycosis is a fungal infection that mainly affects people who are on medication for other health problems that reduce their ability to fight environmental pathogens. This rare disease affects the sinuses and lungs of the individual who inhales fungal spores.
