Article 370: Indian laws apply to J&K as Rajya Sabha clears bifurcation bill

The 70-year-old historic provision in the Constitution, Article 370, that provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir was scrapped in just 50 seconds on Monday morning.

later in the day, the Reorganisation Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha with 125 votes in favour of it. The bill proposed the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories-- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

With the new law, Ladakh has become a separate Union Territory without a legislature, while Jammu and Kashmir became a Union Territory with a legislature.
