With the first batch of Rafale aircraft arriving in Haryana's Ambala, the Indian Air Force now stares at the massive task of operationalising these multi-role fighter jets. These aircraft will now be inducted into the Indian Air Force's No 17 squadron known as 'Golden Arrows'.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh received the first Rafale aircraft in October of last year during his visit to France. India had inked a deal with Dassault Aviation to supply 36 of these multi-role aircraft. The company has committed to deliver the remaining jets by the end of 2021.
Each of these aircraft is powered by a unique rocket-ramjet motor and is equipped by meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missile apart from scalp cruise missiles developed by European manufacturer MBDA.
