Tragedy King Dilip Kumar at 92

Tragedy King Dilip Kumar turns a year older today. The legendary actor recently fought bout of illness to come out strong. Here's a look at the Tragedy King's cinematic journey so far.

Dilip Kumar, the first ever Filmfare Best Actor, was born Mohammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922 in Peshawar. He went on to appear in 60 odd-films over 60 years.

Yusuf used to assist his father, a fruit merchant who owned orchards in Peshawar and Maharashtra's Deolali region. The family moved to Mumbai in the 1930s and in 1940, Yusuf left home, moving to Pune where he ran a canteen. He was spotted in the canteen by actress Devika Rani and her director-husband Himanshu Rai, owners of Bombay Talkies studio. Yusuf was named Dilip Kumar by author and screenwriter Bhagwati Charan Verma and he was cast as the male lead in Bombay Talkies' Jwar Bhata (1944).

Dilip Kumar married actress and Saira Banu in 1966 when he was aged 44 and she was 22.

Dilip Kumar received many awards throughout his career which include Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 - the highest for cinematic excellence in India.

The movie legend started his career in 1944 and worked in some of the biggest commercially successful films. The actor's performances have been regarded as the epitome of emoting in Indian cinema.

Dilip Kumar became known for playing tragic roles in popular films such as Deedar, Amar, Devdas and Daag which earned him the title of "tragedy king".

The actor was born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Peshawar, then Undivided India.
