Salman Khan's Sultan to Aamir Khan's Dangal: The biggest Bollywood blockbusters of 2016

Some films set the cash registers ringing this year as they raked in moolah at the box office. From Salman Khan's Sultan to Ranbir Kapoor's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, a handful of films turned our to be the biggest blockbusters of 2016.

Sultan: If a Salman Khan film is releasing around Eid, there are more chances that it will turn out to be a blockbuster. And exactly the same happened with Sultan. The 50-year-old actor took on the character of a wrestler and the film turned out to be the biggest blockbuster of 2016 by minting Rs 300 crore at the box office.

Airlift: When Akshay Kumar and Neeraj Pandey collaborate for a film, the result is expected to be outstanding. And the same happened with Airlift. The gripping tale of bravery and heroism struck the right chord with the audience and also minted good moolah at the box office. It was the first film of 2016 to enter the Rs 100 crore club.

Neerja: Sonam Kapoor and director Ram Madhvani brought the incredible story of Neerja Bhanot on 70mm. Apart from an inspiring story, Neerja was appreciated for Sonam's exemplary acting. The film struck gold at the box office and also won the hearts of the audience.

Kapoor and Sons: Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra's family drama turned out to be one of biggest blockbusters of 2016. Made on a budget of Rs 37 crore, the Shakun Batra film went onto collect more than Rs 70 crore at the box office.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Ranbir Kapoor's crackling chemistry to oh-so-handsome Fawad Khan's cameo to shayari, everything about this romantic drama was appreciated by the audience. Despite the stiff competition from Ajay Devgn's Shivaay, ADHM worked wonders at the box office.

Baaghi: Shraddha Kapoor and Tiger Shroff's romantic actioner Baaghi turned out to be a surprise hit of 2016. From kickass action to Tiger-Shraddha's chemistry, a lot worked in favoured of the film.

Pink: It was positive word-of-mouth publicity which worked in favour of Amitabh Bachchan's Pink. A gripping court room drama was lauded for its strong attack on India's patriarchal mindset which doesn't allow its women to live freely. And soon the film became a hit at the ticket windows.

Rustom: Akshay Kumar had a superb 2016 as two of films- Airlift and Rustom struck gold at the box office. In fact, Rustom is Akshay's fastest film to make it to the Rs 100-crore club. Directed by debutant Tinu Suresh Desai, Rustom went on to gross about Rs 218.8 crore at the end of its 5-week run.

Dangal: Aamir Khan is back on silver screen after a gap of two years with Dangal. And if the initial collections are to be kept in the mind, Dangal will turn out to one of the biggest hits of 2016. Within three days of its release, Dangal has already minted Rs 106 crore at the box office.
