When their hamlets were devastated by the earthquake in 1993, the Banjaras of Latur lost practically everything but the clothes they were wearing. That, as it turned out, was enough. </p><p>Noticing the elaborately designed pouches the women wore, NGOs Oxfam and the Catholic Health Association of India sat up. More NGOs stepped in, so did the state Government, a Banjara Arts and Development Centre was set up and a co-operative society was registered.</p><p>And after two-and-a-half years of labour, came last fortnight's show - skirts, dresses, lamp shades and more, for anything from Rs 2,000 to Rs 18,000.<br><br>The idea is that the women who have been trained so far should now teach other women. Says Hemka Bai, one of the chosen 25: "We want to stand on our own feet. But you must give us orders." The first was from ITDC run Samrat Hotel for a wall hanging priced at Rs 16,000.
