For, this is the family entertainment centre (FEC) the place to be in for hours of hassle-free fun.</p><p>On offer: ice-skating, roller-blading, video games, bowling, go-karting, pool, pizzas ... you name it. It's all there under a single roof. Courtesy some of the biggest names in the business, FECs are all set to revolutionise family entertainment in the country. </p><p>Thirty km north of Nariman Point, Mumbai's bustling financial district, construction is in full swing at the Powai complex of the Hiranandani group of companies. This 20,000 sqft, Rs 5 crore fec will house, among other things, a go-kart racing track for 15 karts, a mini-golf course, a 12-lane bowling alley and, later on, a ski slope with all the trappings of an Austrian ski resort. Drop in at any FEC over the weekend and you'll see podgy mothers in bright tracksuits hurling pin balls down the alley, as excited as their children. Some could even be rock climbing with their husbands.</p><p>Whether you are eight or 80, there's something for everyone. Bowling, for one, is definitely in. What started out as an experiment at the 32nd Milestone Complex in Gurgaon, near Delhi, 10-pin bowling has spread like wildfire with centres opening up in Bangalore, Mumbai, Calcutta Chennai, Ahmednagar, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.</p><p>The country's expected to have 500 lanes by June. With games raking in huge sums-from Rs 125 (for 20 throws) during the day to Rs 150 in the evening-companies such as Brunswick International, Mendes Pvt Ltd and the US-based AMF are willing to spend Rs 1 crore on a minimum 10,000 sq ft, four-lane centre. To top it all, in the age of increasing health consciousness, FECs would be just the place to hang out.</p><p>As Surendran Hiranandani, MD, Hiranandani Constructions, says, "Today amusement parks and water worlds have lost their appeal because of the bad reputation that accompanies them. That is why we are starting fecs where the emphasis will be on wholesome, clean fun, and where smoking and drinking are banned."<br><br>Folks love it. Says Ashesh Kedia, a doctor with two children, all of them bowling regulars at Leisure Bowl: "This way the whole family is together, we enjoy the games together and have a great evening out." Priorities may differ. Says Farad Irani, a lawyer and mini-golf addict at Mumbai's Hakone Entertainment Centre: "Who knows, it's Hakone complex today and Ryder's cup tomorrow." </p><p>Just that at Hakone, Irani can forget all the rules of the game: birdies, holes-in-one and everything else. It's simple: finish the nine course in the shortest possible time and just avoid the alligator house, the lion's den and various other obstacles that you need to tackle before you get the cup.<br><br>The cup of snazzy entertainment is spilling over. At Sports Cafe, slated to open soon in Delhi, waiters will don green and blue outfits and carry cricket bats each time there is an India-Pakistan match. </p><p>If Wimbledon's on, it'll be tony tennis gear. There'll be TVs under transparent table tops, so you can watch while you munch, and there'll be pool tables on the side to help you work up an appetite.<br><br>Among the big attractions are the virtual reality cafes and halls with simulators and games. Involvement has taken on a whole new meaning. Insert a token and for the next five minutes or more, depending on your skill, you can transform yourself into your favourite star, matching him punch for punch. </p><p>You can be a maverick Tom Cruise from <i>Top Gun</i>, seated in your F-16 aircraft pulverising bandits in <i>Target</i>, or Bruce Willis of <i>Die Hard</i> or even Mitch of Baywatch escorting a lovely Pamela Anderson along the beaches of Miami.<br><br>The profits just won't stop pouring in. Despite investment being anywhere between Rs 1 crore and Rs 12 crore, depending on the facilities offered, fec companies are expecting to break even within five years. With the numbers of the upwardly mobile swelling by the day, these companies are already thinking of spreading their wings. </p><p>The management of Destination Point, for example, plans to open 24 such complexes all over the country. Hiranandani too intends to expand to nearby districts.
