The world's fattest rat is too bulky to do much else. But the discomfort of these rodents could help develop cures for obesity, diabetes and related diseases.</p><p>Nappan Veetil Giridharan, a rat geneticist at the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, has bred a colony of 400 of the obese rats. It wasn't easy. </p><p>Males turned out to be infertile and females had delayed puberty. So he inbred a particular strain of rats and established a colony of nearly 400 rodents. </p><p>Each is five times heavier than a normal rat and is further distinguished by having a quirky tail, unlike its straight-tailed, normal-sized cousins.
