Today, nearly 120 years after its discovery in 1852, 'Peak-15' in the Nepal Himalaya - better known as Mount Everest - is the most sought after mountain in the world, and the fountain-head of a major industry in this Himalayan kingdom.<br><br>This autumn, 10 expedition groups have converged on the Everest area. Three of these will be climbing Everest itself. Christopher Kopczynski, an American accompanied by a Sherpa guide were the first to scale Everest this year from the Nepalese side last fortnight.<br><br>Another American group will be attempting to put its men on the summit from the northern face of Everest which falls within the Tibetan region of China - a poignant reminder of the new found Sino-American rapprochement. The Russians, who are newcomers to the Everest game, are attempting to unfurl the hammer and sickle for the first time later this year-from the Nepalese side, of course.<br><br>The Everest industry has had a phenomenal impact on the region surrounding the "highest hump on earth", transforming the lifestyle of the local people, especially the indomitable Sherpas, who have acquired the distinction of being the best mountain climbers in the world.<br><br></p><div class="itg-mosimage"><amp-img src="https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.dev?url=https%3A%2F%2Fakm-img-a-in.tosshub.com%2Fsites%2Fmedia2%2Findiatoday%2Fimages%2Fstories%2F1981November%2Findustry-2_102613101154.jpg" alt="" height="425" width="650" class="" layout="responsive"></amp-img>Mt. Everest: Booked till 1988</div></p><p>For the Sherpas the increasing popularity of Everest has been a major boon. It has happily filled the economic vacuum left by the cut-off of trade with Tibet since 1959 when the Chinese moved in. "If many westerners come, we can eat wheat; if they don't come, we have to eat millet," sums up the present mood of the Sherpas. A study conducted by anthropologist Janice Sacherer on the Sherpa community of Rolwaling showed that a young Sherpa man earned on the average about Rs 1,800 annually while the rest of his family could easily earn Rs 1,100-1,500 (at 1978 rates). The average per capita income of Nepal is about Rs 1,000. The new-found affluence among the Sherpas contrasts sharply with the gradual erosion of their traditions. "What is certain, however, is the declining value of the Tibetan literary and monastic tradition," observes Sacherer.<br><br><b>Heavy Traffic</b>: A sizeable portion of the Nepalese Government's annual foreign exchange earnings of Rs 31 crore comes from trekkers and expeditions. This year there are a record-breaking 43 climbing expeditions to the Nepal Himalaya. About 20,000 of the 35,000 trekkers that romp through Nepal are found on the Everest trail.<br><br>During the peak tourist season (October-March), the national flag-carrier Royal Nepal Airlines (RNAC) operates five Twin Otter flights a day to Lukla-the air-head which is a week's walk from the Everest base camp. All along the trail, hotels, lodges and tea-shops have sprung up like mushrooms.<br><br>Hotel Everest View - which proclaims itself the highest situated hotel in the world at an altitude of 13,000 ft- is 45 minutes walking distance from the Lukla air strip. With all its 12 twin-bedded rooms fitted with oxygen, Hotel Everest View is set among the world's most spectacular peaks-Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Tamserku and Tawoche.<br><br>Namche Bazar - the capital of Khumbu-is a bustling market town, its shops peddling a plethora of items from trekking gear to Polish chocolates, Spanish sardines, and Swiss cheese - all leftovers from expeditions. "Trekking is staging a comeback," enthuses a Sherpani proprietor of a lodge in Lukla, allaying fears that the recession in the West may inhibit the influx of tourists in the area.<br><br>Most Sherpa villages fall within the boundaries of the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park - an area that the Government of Nepal has especially marked out for the conservation of its rich flora and fauna. The trekking boom has, however, turned out to be the conservationists' nightmare. Although expeditions and trekking groups are required to burn kerosene for cooking purposes, yaks laden with firewood from the forested lower valleys invariably make their way to base camps.<br><br>There is no substitute for the warmth of fire wood in the cold blustering heights of the Himalaya. The net result is that apart from the garbage that expeditions leave behind, trekkers are inexorably undermining the already fragile mountain eco-system Portering has been a good source of additional income for the farmers of Nepal since the trekking months (October-May) conveniently fall during the agricultural offseason.<br><br>But ironically, the porters earn only a miniscule fraction of the money that trekking injects into the Nepalese economy. Most trekking agencies in Kathmandu are run by unscrupulous middlemen who charge up to Rs 270 a day per trekker. Laurels, lecture tours, books, articles in glossy magazines like National Geographic and Geo are only some of the windfalls of a successful assault on Everest.<br><br>In spite of discordant voices within the tourism sector-there are people in Kathmandu who think that Nepal is sold "too cheaply" and advocate pulling the throttle back-the Everest industry is poised for a take-off.
