The numbers game has always been tricky. When it happens to something as critical as the number of people with incurable HIV infection, it can become dangerous.Alarming enough was the UNDP's latest assessment of the spread of AIDS in India: the 1998 Human Development Report said that India has the largest number of people living with HIV: 3-5 million. Close on the heels of this report came a series of numbers from the Government's National Aids Control Organisation (NACO). Denying a report that HIV prevalence in the country had risen to 1 percent of the population, NACO went on record saying the actual figure was just half - 0.5 percent. Meanwhile, NACO's website still says there are 74,960 HIV-infected Indians, millions of cases lower than the latest figures being thrown around. The bottom line?
