Brash, if you must, with streaks of arrogance in their talk, or colour in their hair. Navel-piercing and nihilistic, they wear their "attitude" like a tattoo on the forehead. </p><p>"Without attitude we are anonymous," they chorus. It's everything - it makes them look exciting, exigent and expansive. More than being cool, brainy or just plain savvy, for the youth today, it's attitude that counts. </p><p>Attitude that, in a world made tough by intense competition, gives them that edge. That makes them cocksure of their abilities and arrogant in their mediocrity. Attitude that will make them prowl tirelessly for that better deal, hunting down opportunities that free them from the monetary constraints that imprisoned their parents. </p><p>"With it, I'm like a pimple on the smooth round ass of humanity ... and it gets me places,'' says Akshay Ramdas, a Delhi college student, with shaven head and face obscured by wraparound shades.<br></p><p>It's the new word on the campus. Like "hip" - not too long ago, right through the '80s, that old-fashioned word hung over colleges. Hip simply meant "being with it", though that added up to a lot of things then. Check out the ad line: "Wear your attitude." Or Channel V's motto: "We are like this only." </p><p>For instance, McCann-Erickson, which is carrying out an ongoing study called "Pulse" across the country on a fortnightly basis, talks about how this generation is turning out to be full of go-getters who are just doing it - but their way and with loads of attitude. </p><p>The Pulse reports indicate that this new bunch is "wilder, wackier and work much harder". And if you don't see it their way ... they don't hesitate to tell you where to get off. Says Param Saikia, the firm's associate vice-president: "This generation is supremely confident, even arrogant, you can't bullshit them."<br><br>But what is attitude? The first thing - it isn't a negative vibe anymore. Now, it's something you crave for. Most frequent answer: "It's a state of mind." Adds Imam Siddique, casting director with Ammirati Puris Lintas: "If you have an attitude, you're alive; if not you're dead." The mindset of "acquiring an attitude" seems to be a mixture of things that work in different realms - but all geared towards an overall impression of coolness.</p><p>Attitude exudes an image - "of doing things my way", "of whuping ass", "of being in supreme control". It also comes with oozes of snob value: of being a regular at the latest thing on the Web - buddylines called ICQ - that allows "the gang" to chat over the Net.</p><p>And has its inherent pecking order: "We used to shoot pool in Capachino (a cafe in Delhi) till the crudos (read trashy kids who still wear tight jeans) caught on. Now we're into go-karting." But check out the flip side too. </p><p>Says Mahesh Khemani, whose 20-year-old son Ashish has shaved his head and puts up posters of Rap star Biggie Smalls on the walls: "Attitude? It means Actions Most Likely to Infuriate My Parents." Whatever. For all those dudes out there with serious 'tude, there is a set of codes - and you either play by them or improve upon them.</p><p>More than anything else, clothes today exude attitude. "It's simple, they scream out," says Abhiroopa Mathur, a Delhi College of Art student. The look is wild, bold and full of funk. The women have it better: with sexy shorts, cling-on or cut-out dresses, suits in latex, knitted net dresses and even silver mesh.</p><p>They streak or shorn (their hair), pierce (almost anything) and expose (navel, cleavage - breasts and bums). The new rage is psychedelic nail polish - most of it acquired from the US with colours called Pimp (a slang for cool) and Porno. "I'm constantly asked why I dress like this," says Mytri Singh, a twenty-something computer executive. "I'm like, who the .... are you? But then again, if I'm in a better mood, I say 'It's the way I perceive who I am. Do you have problems with that?'"</p><p>The men are more into grunge or hip-hop, there is a lot of black and everything is worn loose, they love jewellery but call it "accessories" (say chokers or rings), sport goatees with sideburn cuts that arc towards the mouth and smooth back their hair with gel. </p><p>Says Zubin Pratap, who is applying for college next year: "For us (his gang) what's in is really loose pedalpushers with boxer shorts worn inside, but sticking out so that they can be seen - on top its either a bare chest or a baseball vest."</p><table>   <tbody><tr><td><div align="center"><b>Attitudes</b><br><hr size="2" width="100%"></div><b>"These guys have a mindset that says 'do anarchic things'."</b><br><b>Shashank Ghosh</b> <i>Creative director, </i>Channel V<br><hr size="2" width="100%"><b>"Attitude means actions most likely to infuriate my parents."</b><b><br>Mahesh Khemani</b> <i>Parent<br></i><hr size="2" width="100%"><b>"It's the way I perceive who I am ... do you have a problem?"<br></b><b>Mytri Singh</b> <i>Computer Executive</i><br></td></tr></tbody> </table></p><p>Vivek Sahni, who plans to get into the National Institute of Fashion Technology next year, says he learnt the principles of dressing fast enough. Insulation, he was told - that was ticket. "My seniors in college kept telling me... you've got to insulate, insulate, insulate." </p><p>Meaning insulate yourself from the rest - the crummy geeks (read losers). Stand out. Take Khalil Joseph, a Ramjas College student, with high Dingo boots with chains, shredded jeans and a heavy metal T-shirt, long tresses and a dangling cross earring. "This is me. And I get noticed." He adds, laughing: "Though my girlfriend complains that people watch me more than her."</p><p>But then, it isn't all just clothes. A lot has to do with the way you conduct yourself - and in your own way, make a statement. Mostly about yourself. A case in point is Warren Norhona, a young website designer for whom "attitude comes from the gut". Totally unpredictable - like the other day at a dance bar in Mumbai when he just felt the urge to jump onto the stage among the women dancers and perform a mock striptease to the music. </p><p>"The women gave me dirts but I also had a lot of money thrown at me... that's me, making a statement." And it is more than just a statement - it's about a collective mindset of this generation that keeps saying, "Take it to the limit - and don't give a damn about anybody else." The same rules apply to work. Says Rohit Srivastava, a student: "Attitude makes you perform, compete better."</p><p>The bottom line for a generation who right from the beginning learnt to view school, even primary school, as an arena of relentless competition; to enter the work-force unsure of where they are going but clear enough that the destination is the top. </p><p>Attitude gives Shefalika Sharma, a student in Delhi University's south campus, a rule of thumb for everything: if she becomes a doctor, she has to cure cancer, if a businesswoman then it's CEO of one of the top 100 companies, at least.</p><p>Instead of forsaking the rat race, you get seduced into it. Attitude is competing with a "don't mess with me" tag on the sleeve. "If I'm number one, I have a right to brag." The recent surge of extreme sports - from bungee jumping to heli-skiing - is no coincidence. Indeed, attitude seems to portray a harder, even ruthless image of themselves. </p><p>Points out Kabir Singh, a St Stephen's student: "You have to be a bit of a dickhead. Push or get pushed." Adds Danny, 22, who wants to be a professional dancer in Bangalore: "When you are a loose- haired punk, with dark glasses and an earring, like me, a lot of guys add it all up to mean a 'dopey' - fit for nothing. And attitude again plays a major part. Remember dingy dance parties lighted up with zero watt red bulbs, diluted rum that served as punch, awkward girls and shuffling boys girding up courage to ask for the first dance? No longer. </p><p>The happening parties are loose and wild - open houses where hundred of couples are doing "their own thing". The boys in loud shorts and reversed baseball caps, the girls in midriff-baring tank tops, all moving to a chirpy Hindi film ballad that has been remixed with a thudding hip-hop beat.</p><p>Says Nilakshi Sengupta, a Lintas executive in Mumbai: "Good girls go to heaven, I go anywhere - that's my philosophy." But observe closely and you'll see that this generation with attitude goes to places that conform to their ways of life. Check out the hangout joints these days: sports cafes that have pool tables, electronic dart-boards, a neon-lighted juke box and a snack bar. </p><p>Bowling alleys with eerie psychedelic lighting that makes the ball luminous in your hands. Cyber cafes where kids chill out in virtual lounges. Gokarting round a dragstrip, or buying an extra-large bag of buttered popcorn in a multiplex. Everything's changed. Down even to social habits.</p><table>   <tbody><tr><td><div align="center"><b>The attitude credo</b><br><hr size="2" width="100%"></div><b>Look no further:</b> Appearance is vital. My clothes scream: "Look at me."<br><b>Push or get pushed:</b> If I am good, I kick ass; either you are or you ain't.<br>Everything I do, I do it for me: If it's not about me, I'm not even listening.<br><b>Work is the best way to fill space between two parties:</b> I freak out on both.<br><b>Know all the answers before the questions:</b> I need to feel I am always in control.<br><b>Values are good from far but far from good: </b>It's okay to have parents but don't let them get in my way.<br><b>This sauce is different, boss: </b>I am original and I do things that shock.<br><b>Only the highest, no matter what: </b>If I become a doctor, I have to cure cancer - at least.<br></td></tr></tbody> </table></p><p>For Neel Aurora, in Hindu College, parties are the perfect place to stage his one-act attitude play. Says he: "In Delhi's facetious social scene, you have to make a noise to get noticed." </p><p>He calls himself the master of intoxication, playing both the booze and drug games that are common today. "It's a bit about being macho, people turn around and say that guy's got attitude."</p><p>He can drink anyone under the table with tequila shots but what he really excels in is "glug " - a beer drinking competitive session where a can (it has to be Strohs) is taken and punctured close to the base. </p><p>The idea is to glug down the beer from the hole even as someone opens the can from the top - what basically happens is that all the beer gushes down the throat in about five clear seconds. Aurora's record is 13 cans, of the extra-strong variety. </p><p>If that isn't foolhardy enough, consider this: "The other thing that freaks everybody out is the acid blotting paper (LSD) as you jump to some wild techno beat."<br><br>Anything is accepted. Says Shashank Ghosh, creative director (consulting) of Channel V: "These guys have a mindset today that says, 'Do anarchic things.' If that's conventional, reposition it as boring. Do unconventional things." It seems to be an intangible thing that has been taken from the West. All icons of American culture. </p><p>All perceived to have attitude. Yet, ironically, even as they become available to more than a small, tiny elite, they seem to lose their talismanic power. If life depended earlier on a pair of Levi 501s, today it means at least a Dolce & Gabbana T-shirt.<br><br>So then, is what was being rebellious in any other generation just given the colour of attitude in the late '90s? Yes and no. Attitude does mean breaking into the happening bracket - of doing the right thing and being the kind of person you want to be perceived as. Something that has been a feature of every generation. </p><p>But it also means a lot to do with yourself. Rebellion, because those who conformed did not understand, was a tag for all those who were supposed to be slackers, cynics and drifters. Not here. Attitude isn't about rebelling against the system. Its core motive is to establish your individuality. "All your battles are being fought within," says Aurora. </p><p>What comes out then is pure, original attitude. "But then again, maybe it is just a phase and years later I'll be looking at old, mouldy photographs and laughing at myself," he says. Insulation, he was told - that was ticket. "My seniors in college kept telling me... you've got to insulate, insulate, insulate." </p><p>Meaning insulate yourself from the rest - the crummy geeks (read losers). Stand out. Take Khalil Joseph, a Ramjas College student, with high Dingo boots with chains, shredded jeans and a heavy metal T-shirt, long tresses and a dangling cross earring. "This is me. And I get noticed." He adds, laughing: "Though my girlfriend complains that people watch me more than her."</p><p>But then, it isn't all just clothes. A lot has to do with the way you conduct yourself - and in your own way, make a statement. Mostly about yourself. A case in point is Warren Norhona, a young website designer for whom "attitude comes from the gut". Totally unpredictable - like the other day at a dance bar in Mumbai when he just felt the urge to jump onto the stage among the women dancers and perform a mock striptease to the music. </p><p>"The women gave me dirts but I also had a lot of money thrown at me... that's me, making a statement." And it is more than just a statement - it's about a collective mindset of this generation that keeps saying, "Take it to the limit - and don't give a damn about anybody else." The same rules apply to work. Says Rohit Srivastava, a student: "Attitude makes you perform, compete better."</p><p>The bottom line for a generation who right from the beginning learnt to view school, even primary school, as an arena of relentless competition; to enter the work-force unsure of where they are going but clear enough that the destination is the top. </p><p>Attitude gives Shefalika Sharma, a student in Delhi University's south campus, a rule of thumb for everything: if she becomes a doctor, she has to cure cancer, if a businesswoman then it's CEO of one of the top 100 companies, at least.</p><p>Instead of forsaking the rat race, you get seduced into it. Attitude is competing with a "don't mess with me" tag on the sleeve. "If I'm number one, I have a right to brag." The recent surge of extreme sports - from bungee jumping to heli-skiing - is no coincidence. Indeed, attitude seems to portray a harder, even ruthless image of themselves. </p><p>Points out Kabir Singh, a St Stephen's student: "You have to be a bit of a dickhead. Push or get pushed." Adds Danny, 22, who wants to be a professional dancer in Bangalore: "When you are a loose- haired punk, with dark glasses and an earring, like me, a lot of guys add it all up to mean a 'dopey' - fit for nothing. And attitude again plays a major part. Remember dingy dance parties lighted up with zero watt red bulbs, diluted rum that served as punch, awkward girls and shuffling boys girding up courage to ask for the first dance? No longer. </p><p>The happening parties are loose and wild - open houses where hundred of couples are doing "their own thing". The boys in loud shorts and reversed baseball caps, the girls in midriff-baring tank tops, all moving to a chirpy Hindi film ballad that has been remixed with a thudding hip-hop beat.</p><p>Says Nilakshi Sengupta, a Lintas executive in Mumbai: "Good girls go to heaven, I go anywhere - that's my philosophy." But observe closely and you'll see that this generation with attitude goes to places that conform to their ways of life. Check out the hangout joints these days: sports cafes that have pool tables, electronic dart-boards, a neon-lighted juke box and a snack bar. </p><p>Bowling alleys with eerie psychedelic lighting that makes the ball luminous in your hands. Cyber cafes where kids chill out in virtual lounges. Gokarting round a dragstrip, or buying an extra-large bag of buttered popcorn in a multiplex. Everything's changed. Down even to social habits.</p><table style="margin-left: 8px; background-color: rgb(229, 229, 229);" align="right" border="1" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="3" height="120" width="265">   <tbody><tr><td><div align="center"><b style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">The attitude credo</b><br><hr size="2" width="100%"></div><b>Look no further:</b> Appearance is vital. My clothes scream: "Look at me."<br><b>Push or get pushed:</b> If I am good, I kick ass; either you are or you ain't.<br>Everything I do, I do it for me: If it's not about me, I'm not even listening.<br><b>Work is the best way to fill space between two parties:</b> I freak out on both.<br><b>Know all the answers before the questions:</b> I need to feel I am always in control.<br><b>Values are good from far but far from good: </b>It's okay to have parents but don't let them get in my way.<br><b>This sauce is different, boss: </b>I am original and I do things that shock.<br><b>Only the highest, no matter what: </b>If I become a doctor, I have to cure cancer - at least.<br></td></tr></tbody> </table></p><p>For Neel Aurora, in Hindu College, parties are the perfect place to stage his one-act attitude play. Says he: "In Delhi's facetious social scene, you have to make a noise to get noticed." </p><p>He calls himself the master of intoxication, playing both the booze and drug games that are common today. "It's a bit about being macho, people turn around and say that guy's got attitude."</p><p>He can drink anyone under the table with tequila shots but what he really excels in is "glug " - a beer drinking competitive session where a can (it has to be Strohs) is taken and punctured close to the base. </p><p>The idea is to glug down the beer from the hole even as someone opens the can from the top - what basically happens is that all the beer gushes down the throat in about five clear seconds. Aurora's record is 13 cans, of the extra-strong variety. </p><p>If that isn't foolhardy enough, consider this: "The other thing that freaks everybody out is the acid blotting paper (LSD) as you jump to some wild techno beat."<br><br>Anything is accepted. Says Shashank Ghosh, creative director (consulting) of Channel V: "These guys have a mindset today that says, 'Do anarchic things.' If that's conventional, reposition it as boring. Do unconventional things." It seems to be an intangible thing that has been taken from the West. All icons of American culture. </p><p>All perceived to have attitude. Yet, ironically, even as they become available to more than a small, tiny elite, they seem to lose their talismanic power. If life depended earlier on a pair of Levi 501s, today it means at least a Dolce & Gabbana T-shirt.<br><br>So then, is what was being rebellious in any other generation just given the colour of attitude in the late '90s? Yes and no. Attitude does mean breaking into the happening bracket - of doing the right thing and being the kind of person you want to be perceived as. Something that has been a feature of every generation. </p><p>But it also means a lot to do with yourself. Rebellion, because those who conformed did not understand, was a tag for all those who were supposed to be slackers, cynics and drifters. Not here. Attitude isn't about rebelling against the system. Its core motive is to establish your individuality. "All your battles are being fought within," says Aurora. </p><p>What comes out then is pure, original attitude. "But then again, maybe it is just a phase and years later I'll be looking at old, mouldy photographs and laughing at myself," he says.
