When Edgar Mitchell flew to the moon on board Apollo 14 in 1971, he radioed back enthusiastically that "the earth looks like a sparkling blue and white jewel ... Laced with slowly swirling veils of white ... Like a small pearl in a thick black sea of mystery".<br><br>After her first odyssey Indian-born Kalpana Chawla, who died on February 1 last year, turned cosmological: "When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel you are not just from any particular piece of land but from the solar system. You are a resident of the MilkyWay."<br><br>Now we have two NASA-built Rovers scouring the scorched surface of Mars. They are not bestowed with intelligence enough to express themselves. But the stream of pictures and data that they send back every day reveals a wondrous new world that is already changing the way we look at the red planet. And also our own. Suddenly planetary exploration has returned as the hottest new frontier for space-faring nations. US President George W. Bush announced last month a grand plan to put a man on Mars.<br><br>Meanwhile, China has announced moon missions possibly even with taikonauts. Europe and Japan too have dusted out their plans to explore the lunar surface. India has a more modest ambition of sending a spacecraft, Chandrayaan-1, to orbit the moon by 2008.<br><br>So what earthly benefit can we derive from these treks to outerspace? Good question to ask before billions are sunk in. Let us not forget the basics - it spurs the spirit of inquiry that has already yielded tremendous benefits that impact our daily lives. What was sci-fi two decades ago is now a reality. Satellite television is a byproduct.<br><br>So is the revolution in wireless and mobile telecommunications. Simple things like carbon fibre in tennis racquets or golf clubs, which make them strong and light, are a fall-out of the quest to constantly lessen the load in space. So is the astounding success of miniaturisation especially in computing.<br><br>But most of all space exploration elevates us from our humdrum existence, makes us walk on the cutting edge of technology and takes us to worlds we have never been before. It unites the globe in a way that no political ideology can.
