Gujral government if only because it meant saying goodbye to the "Gujral doctrine", an ill-thought out collection of policies whose main point was that India ought to give unilateral concessions to curry favour with its neighbours.</p><p>But Gujral is not giving up without a fight. He hopes to exercise his influence in foreign-policy making through other means. </p><p>Insiders say that he is manoeuvring to succeed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the chairman of Parliament's standing committee on external affairs. But where Vajpayee held the position as the leader of the Opposition, Gujral's party, the Janata Dal, has a mere six seats in the Lok Sabha. </p><p>Vajpayee, say reports, has agreed to Gujral's appointment, even though this is likely to create difficulties for the BJP-led coalition's effort to put its own stamp on foreign policy. </p><p>In essence, say those familiar with the party's views, it would be to offer incentives to promote goodwill with all its neighbours except Pakistan. Twenty people, including women and children, were left stranded 75 feet above the ground after an amusement ride malfunctioned at an exhibition held at Codissia Grounds in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when around 20 visitors, including three children, were stuck on the ride, prompting police and the Fire and Rescue Department to respond. Using a sky lift vehicle, the rescue team worked for roughly 45 minutes to safely bring everyone down. The incident has raised safety concerns, following a similar case in Chennai last year where visitors were left stranded on an amusement ride, highlighting the need for periodic inspections and strict safety checks of such attractions.
