The original band, the Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI(ML)) commonly referred to as the Naxalites, had in the meanwhile split up into myriad factions.</p><p>One of them, the Organising Committee for Communist Revolutionaries (OCCR) met last fortnight in that old hunting ground in West Bengal. What made this meeting noteworthy was that the principal theme was the total denunciation of the late Charu Mazumdar, founding father of the Naxalbari movement. Among those who condemned him was Kanu Sanyal, once considered Mazumdar's right hand man, and Nagbhushan Patnaik of Srikakulam fame.</p><p>Though the group still believes in an armed revolution as the only effective means of restructuring society just as Mazumdar did, they have rejected totally his line of urban terrorism and individual assassination. Both Sanyal and Patnaik urged fellow revolutionaries to get down to the original task of building a militant peasant movement which "we could not undertake because of the distortions introduced by Charu Mazumdar." They also invited other Maoists to "join hands with us to build a true communist party and abjure the path of individual terrorism which can only lead to frustration".</p><p><b>No Secrecy:</b> Also significant was the fact the OCCR seemed to be ready to come in out of the shadows. The meeting lacked the secrecy that always marked the activity of the CPI(ML). The price paid for the secrecy advocated by Mazumdar was indeed a heavy one. The different units of the party had no contact with each other and it came to a point when there was not even a central line of command. In fact, it was this that made it possible for the police to strike at them with such ruthless precision.</p><p>The OCCR leadership has also announced that it will no longer follow Mazumdar's line of rejecting mass movements on economic issues and questions on democratic rights. Mazumdar had branded such movements and also trade unionism as "revisionist" and hence, untouchable.</p><div class="itemcenter"><amp-iframe height="62" title="" width="320" sandbox="allow-forms allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-top-navigation allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation" allowfullscreen src="https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.dev?url=https%3A%2F%2Fakm-img-a-in.tosshub.com%2Fsites%2Findiatoday%2Fbanner%2Fpreferred-source-new.html%3Fv%3D1.014%5Cu0026native%3D1" class="mrBt15 preferred-source-banner"> </amp-iframe></div></p><p>In propagating their new line the Sanyal-Patnaik group will come into direct confrontation with other Maoist groups, who still follow the dictums of Mazumdar, like the Nisith Bhattacharya-Aziz-ul-Huq group in West Bengal and the Vinod Mishra one in north Bihar. According to intelligence reports, violence in the future will be among these factions and the fight against the ones who they all consider the real class enemies will be reserved for later. The scenario envisaged is reminiscent of the early '70s when Mazumdar had singled out for violence the CPI(M) as the main enemy of the CPI(ML).</p><p>Though the Naxalbari conclave did not spell it out, there is every indication that the OCCR may even participate in the nation's electoral process. As some of them said: "This is not because of any faith in parliamentary democracy but to bring home to the masses the futility of the system.
