Nearly 40,000 of Gwalior's citizens turned up at Jaivilas Palace to seeJyotiraditya Rao Scindiaof Gwalior and his bridePriyadarshi Raje Gaekwad of Baroda.The Scindias had inserted advertisements in the local dailies inviting everyone to come and bless the newly-weds. The royal family, led by Madhavrao Scindia in full regalia, also went on a procession through the town. At another function, guests were fed jalebis, pakoras and chaat. For the lavish wedding in Delhi earlier, there were around 1,200 elite guests, including the King of Bhutan, the King and Queen of Nepal, President S.D. Sharma, Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and the entire cabinet, Sonia Gandhi, various maharajas and maharanis, and ambassadors. But the scene stealer was the jewellery. Even world-famous jeweller Olaf Van Cleef, who came down from Paris for the wedding, couldn't stop talking about the size and splendour of the ornaments.
